Sarah Stanhope and Jim Cunningham took 1st place in today’s Black Friday Doubles at Sertoma Field in Walhalla. Sarah and Jim won in a throw off over Mike Weirda and Aaron Cunningham. Both teams threw a 42 with the team of Sarah and Jim throwing 12 birdies and the team of Aaron and Mike throwing 10 birdies with an ace on #1 when Aaron took the Ace Pool and won the CTP for the day.
The team of Dave Chansler and Darryl S. took 3rd place with a strong finish of -10 from par.
1st place team got $50; 2nd took $30 and 3rd place went home with $20. We had 20 players including my son Parker, 4, playing in his first tournament/doubles event. The farther/son team of Wright & Wright threw a -5 with 6 birdies and one bogey (4 on hole #4). Parker enjoyed his first event while making 4 putts and giving his team a nice up on hole #2.
This was the second year for Black Friday Doubles in Walhalla. I hope to do something again next year.

The annual Golden Corner Classic is this Saturday in Seneca. Day of registration only. The Seneca course is set in the short positions and will be for both rounds. Details on cost per division can be found at GODGc.com in the sidebar.
Also if you have an interest in Disc Golf Course design, we’ll have maps of the Shaver Recreation Property at the tournament Saturday. If time allows and players are interested we’ll take a group of players to walk some of the 70+ acres we have to work with on the new design.
I look forward to seeing everyone on Saturday.

According to one of my favorite Disc Golf blogs, the oldest tournament in the Upstate, the Upstate Classic, will be featured on WYFF’s evening news. I’m not sure the time so I will be setting the DVR to tape all of WYFF’s news tonight.
Thanks to the Upstate Frolfer for posting that information today. Brandon Barker and Sarah Stanhope will be featured in the story.

The City of Seneca will be one of only a handful of communities across the country that will have multiple disc golf courses in one location. The Seneca City Council voted tonight to give Greater Oconee Disc Golf $6,000 to purchase 18 DisCatcher Baskets for a 2nd course at Shaver Recreation Complex.
Baskets will be ordered as soon as the city allows. The money came from a tourism grant fund. The City gives groups or projects grant money if what they do or promote brings in tourists. Being most of the players on the current course live outside the city, every time to come to play and spend money in Seneca, they’er consider tourists. We applied for just under $12,000. They awarded enough to buy the baskets with the understanding we would be back for more funds next year for cement tee pads and tee signs.
The current course at Shaver Recreation Complex is situated on about 12 acres of land. The new course has somewhere between 50 and 70 acres of land to work with. The available land can be viewed here. I also have bigger maps available if you would like to get involved with the design of the course.
The goal is to design a course that will have multiple pins on most holes and at least two tees per hole. GODG is hoping to have a championship caliber course in Seneca. Details to come.

The Oconee County tourism video was shown publicly for the first time this past Thursday night at Duke Power’s World of Energy. They had three showings for the public. I was able to make the 6:15 viewing.
The video covers all the different things that draw people to Oconee County. It began with talking about the 40 major water falls throughout the county and the 13-hundred miles of shoreline. It covered the different community festivals and the baseball tournaments that have been hosted in Oconee.
Disc Golf got a brief mention and video of someone making a put on hole 1 during the SC Doubles tournament and someone teeing on hole 4. All the video was taken during day one at the Walhalla Course.
As soon as the video is posted somewhere online for all to see, I’ll link it here.

The Oconee County Tourism Site, SCMountainLakes.com, has added a Disc Golf section to their website. Most of the information has been cut and pasted from the Greater Oconee Disc Golf site. It’s a start.
A tourism video will be released in December. It includes footage shot during the State Doubles. We’re currently working on becoming partners with the tourism council in Oconee County to better advertise Oconee County as a Disc Golf tourist destination. With three 18-hole courses currently and several more courses planned, Oconee County has the most Disc Golf holes of any county in South Carolina.

The funding request to expand the Disc Golf course at Shaver Recreation Complex in Seneca should be voted on by the full council on November 10th. Greater Oconee Disc Golf has made a request through the City of Seneca’s HAT Grant fund to add a second 18 hole Disc Golf course at Shaver Recreation Complex.
On Monday, October 5th, club members met with Seneca finance committee members and discussed expanding the course. We talked about how Disc Golf ads to tourism and what a second course in Seneca would mean to the city.
We were told that they would be able to fund the baskets. GODG would, in return, design the course and continue to do a majority of course maintenance. Once a design is ready, the club will ask for help from the city’s street department as far as clearing is concerned. Details when we get closer to the vote.

The Seneca City Council did not vote on the funding for a new Disc Golf Course at their meeting tonight. A vote was expected but is being pushed back to the November meeting.
Greater Oconee Disc Golf has been working on an additional course with the City of Seneca for several months. If funded, Shaver Recreation Complex would be home to two 18 hole courses. The course there now is on 12 acres. A new course, if funded, has about 52+ acres to work with on the design.
We’ve scouted the land and have an idea for a design but nothing would be put in stone until the club meets and discusses all the options. As soon as the Seneca City Council votes on the funding, I’ll make details available here or on GODGc.com.
